Sweet Memory: Chandrababu tweets about ISB’s founding days in a refreshing trip down memory lane

Someone who took the pains to build something at a world-class level in India may be forgotten. But, the structure or the institution will still stand tall to remind us not to forget the person behind the idea. Well, we are talking about Nara Chandrababu Naidu who as a Chief Minister of United Andhra Pradesh between 1995 and 2004 brought in several investments to the state.

Of the big ones that have made Hyderabad one of India’s preferred investment as well as IT destinations is the Indian School of Business (ISB). Recalling this memory on the 20th anniversary of ISB, Chandrababu tweeted “on a piece of land I had earmarked stands a world-class higher education institute driven by a meritocratic culture. Privileged to have worked with Atal ji and all the business tycoons who made it possible. Keep shining, @ISBedu!”

Meanwhile, reminding us of the time, ISB social media tweeted a picture of the institute’s founding day in January 21, 2001: “Business visionaries who thought ahead of their time and piloted the ISB project.”  In fact, the picture is a reflection of one of the great leadership periods in the history of India at the Central level and within the state.

Here’s an excerpt from my book “India’s Glocal Leader” on how ISB came to Hyderabad. “ISB’s founding members were scouting for a location in 1998 on the outskirts of Hyderabad where they visited an area which had huge boulders along with cattle scattered across the hill. Three cities were shortlisted to locate ISB — Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai. And, Hyderabad was not on the radar at all. But, Chandrababu Naidu called each of their members and pitched to locate ISB at Hyderabad, explaining the advantages of the city.”

Interestingly, at a breakfast meeting, he even told them “If a state’s CM is giving you X, my state and I will give you X+I resources.” And, three years later, Hyderabad launched the ISB with its first batch of 128 students entering the doors of this world-class institute.

ISB’s story is what dreams are made of and stands as a testimony to what great leadership and governance can do to a state and a country like India!
