Vendetta Politics: Why CID notices to Chandrababu look trivial

What seems to be a case filed by a YSRCP leader on an “alleged and unproven land scam as tagged by the ruling party” in Andhra Pradesh has now become the centre of discussion in the state politics. YSRCP MLA Alla Ramakrishna Reddy who filed an FIR, naming TDP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu and former minister P. Narayana for “insider trading in Amaravati land scam” has suddenly risen to fame as the current CM’s favourite man.
This is after the Andhra Pradesh CID police on Tuesday served a notice to former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in the “Amaravati land scam” which the Telugu Desam Party called the most frivolous FIR filed by the YSRCP MLA.
The FIR was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and also the SCs and STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
CID investigating officer Lakshmi Narayana Rao asked Chandrababu to appear in person at the CID regional office in Vijayawada on March 23 “to examine you (A-1) in the above crime, to ascertain facts which are within your exclusive knowledge.”
The FIR was registered by CID on March 12, based on a complaint filed on February 24, over a month after the High Court struck down a case pertaining to “insider trading” in the Amaravati land scam, naming Chandrababu Naidu and former minister P. Narayana as “known suspected, unknown accused.”
The issue pertains to the pooling of land for the development of the state’s new capital city Amaravati back in the year 2015.
The timing of the complaint and FIR raised eyebrows as it came after a lapse of six years and a related matter was struck down by the High Court.
Referring to the MLAs complaint, the FIR said, “some of the formers (farmers) of his constituency represented him that some influenced persons of the then government have cheated them by taking away their lands illegally, fraudulently by keeping innocent peasants under confusion and fear of insecurity about their lands. This set of middlemen who were the part of the conspiracy by making a false representation that the government was going to take away their assigned lands without giving any compensation (sic).”
On that, the complainant verified the GOs issued by the government and found that several irregularities were committed by the respondents and caused irreparable loss to the SC and ST community and weaker sections and got wrongful gains and requested to take necessary legal actions, the FIR said. A team of CID officials went to Chandrababu’s Jubilee Hills residence in Hyderabad, where he is now staying, and served the notice.
As per Section 41 CrPC, any police officer “may without an order from a magistrate and without a warrant, arrest any person who has been concerned in any cognizable offence, or against whom a reasonable complaint has been made, or credible information has been received, or a reasonable suspicion exists, of his having been so concerned.”
Going by the notices served, it is clear that the Jagan government is trying its best to look for ways and means to nail Chandrababu in any and every case possible. However, political analysts point out that without any evidence filing and defaming Chandrababu is part and parcel of YSRCP’s propaganda strategy against the TDP Chief.
“This is not a new thing. They haven’t found any fault. Everyone is aware of the land pooling scheme where farmers themselves donated lands voluntarily for the capital, Amaravati. Now, after Jagan has come, he didn’t want the capital to be there and created ruckus with the three-capital policy. Now, these lands are available for grabs. So, they just want to nail Chandrababu and term it as a scam,” said one analyst.
On the other hand, the High Court struck down the insider trading allegations stating that the YSRCP cannot use such terms as they pertain to share markets or stocks and not anything to do with lands. “In fact, by not having evidence and simple filing cases to trouble Chandrababu is an act of vendetta politics. By hook or crook, they want to make the TDP chief suffer. And, they are not finding ways to do it even two years after they came to power. Hence, the whole ruckus around this issue,” rued a TDP leader.
Not to forget, even the media, is playing a huge role in propagating fake news and fake propaganda in the process. With all this drama happening in AP, it is clear that the media bias is tilted towards the ruling government.
Many wonder if the YSRCP has any evidence first, before it makes claims of a “land scam” which it has been doing since the 2019 elections. One wonders the direction in which the state is progressing as vendetta politics seems to be the only motto of the current government.
