Police brutality exposed as rebel YSRCP MP assaulted in custody

YSR Congress Party MP Raghu Ramakrishna Raju has alleged assault by CID officials in custody. Raju, the Member of Parliament from Narsapuram, was arrested from Hyderabad on charges of sedition last Friday.
Booked under Sections 124-A, 153-A, and 505 read with 120- B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Raghu Ramakrishna Raju was produced before the sixth additional magistrate court in Guntur over the weekend. The court remanded him to 14 days in judicial custody.
Sharing pictures of injuries on his feet, Raju has accused state CID officials of assaulting him in custody. Lawyers of the YSR Congress Party MP even alleged that attempts were made to prevent them from appearing in court.
Raju’s lawyers have also filed a habeas corpus in the division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Earlier, the MP from Narsapuram had demanded the cancellation of bail granted to Andhra Pradesh CM and YSR Congress Party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.
BJP, TDP condemn physical assault
Meanwhile, BJP national secretary and the party’s co-incharge of Andhra Pradesh, Sunil Deodhar accused the CID of 'torturing' the rebel YSRCP MP.
In a tweet, Deodhar said, “I condemn the torture of MP #RaghuRamaKrishnamRaju by AP Police. Till now, people of AP thought @YSRCParty is a Rowdy-Party. But now, the Police Dept also seems to have become its own Rowdy outfit.”
TDP chief and former Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu also demanded a probe into the matter. Naidu alleged that senior officials were violating laws and resorting to ‘third degree methods’ against a Member of Parliament “only to see happiness in the eyes of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh”.
The state government will be responsible if anything happens to Raju, said Naidu. He added: “A Member of Lok Sabha elected by lakhs of voters was subjected to physical punishment. The incident would remain a blot to the entire police machinery in the state.”
Unfortunately, the YSRCP government as well as the police have also not heeded the directions of the court in producing the medical report on RRR and his injuries. It remains to be seen how this episode of arrest of their own rebel MP will pan out for the YSRCP in the term ahead.
