COVID Impact: Finally, AP 10th Exams Cancelled, Students Promoted

For sometime now, there has been chaos and confusion all over the student community over the conduct of exams. In Andhra Pradesh, it all began when the government announced dates for the 10th standard Board exams for July. However, in the meantime, the government of Telangana, announced the cancellation of exams and promoted all the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) students.
This move by the neighbouring state triggered the student community who had already been confused by the AP government’s quandary and postponement of exams. Parents too have been demanding the cancellation of exams and thereby, promotion of students, in view of the pandemic.
The exams were initially scheduled to be held in March/April and were postponed twice due to the lockdown that was imposed nationally to contain the spread of the coronavirus. However, after the recent relaxations, the state government had decided the exams would be held in mid-July.
However, amid the growing number of cases in the state, safety of students has been a huge concern. Therefore, the government had decided to promote all the 6.2 lakh students who were supposed to take the 10th standard Board exams.
Now that the government has decided on promoting 10th students, it is working on a mechanism for grading system where a comprehensive evaluation strategy will be put in place. This will be done in consultation with schools in Andhra Pradesh.
Additionally, the state government has also announced the cancellation of all supplementary and improvement examinations for Intermediate Board, while promoting those who are supposed to take these exams.
Supplementary exams are usually a second attempt by students who are unable to clear a particular subject in the first shot while Improvement exams can be written by any student to get a better grade/marks from the first attempt.
Going by the news in Telugu states on the cancellation of 10th exams, looks like the outgoing students will be remembered as the only batches (in their schools) in the recent history to have not taken the Board Exams but were promoted due to an ‘act of God’. All said and done, they sure are a fortunate bunch!
