How GITAM demolition drive is part of YSRCP’s revenge politics

Revenge in politics usually knows no bounds. Whether it be midnight arrests or sudden raids or just blunt demotion of institutions, all is fair in politics, they say. A case of such revenge is seething through the YSRCP Chief and his men in Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s government seems to have now zeroed in on educational institutions' destruction. After a systemic destruction of state apparatus and driving investments out of the state with their regressive approach, the new demolition drive against the GITAM University is an example of how revenge politics is in play in the state.
With allegations of encroachment, the state government took up a sudden demolition drive against the University after midnight on Saturday and went on till early hours of Sunday, claiming that they have encroached around 40 acres of land illegally. Apart from the main entrance and security chamber, the entire compound wall of the engineering and medical blocks was razed to the ground.
It is important to note that the GITAM University was promoted by former TDP parliamentarian late M.V.V.S Murthy. It is currently managed by his grandson M. Sri Bharat, who also happens to be son-in-law of senior Tollywood actor and MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna, son of TDP founder and former chief minister N.T. Rama Rao. Bharat also contested the 2019 general elections from Visakhapatnam parliamentary constituency on TDP ticket.
The whole demolition drive is a live testimony to how far the YSRCP government can go in threatening anyone opposing them. Given that this demolition drive directly impacts TDP, it is a huge blow to the state of politics in Andhra Pradesh. Not only does this exemplify an attack on educational institutions, but also shows how the Jagan-led government is reckless and doesn’t care about millions of students and their future, which is at stake.
It is to be seen how low the politics in the state will stoop to. It is important to note that this demolition is a true example of how things are fast changing in Andhra Pradesh and how lawlessness is ruling the roost, encouraged by the current YSRCP government.
