Dubious plan? Here’s what Jagan Govt’s land resurvey means for AP

In a strange case of what could be a land encroachment plan at a bigger scale, the Jaganmohan Reddy government has come up with a scheme called “YSR Jagananna Saswatha Bhoomi Hakku-Bhoomi Rakshana.
”
The land resurvey scheme across the state is termed as something that will assure permanent land rights and pave way for dispute-free land holdings. However, on the face of it, it sounds pretty impressive.

But if one digs deeper, we are sure to notice how the scheme looks at giving details of vast tracts of land available in the state. That also means that the existing government, which has already been accused of amassing large tracts of land and illegally encroaching them, has more appetite to encroach further.

Earlier, during Chandrababu Naidu’s rule, the government had digitised land records, ushering in land reforms without interfering in knowing details of its citizens’ assets. With digitised land records and land details or availability, the government can find out the extent of lands available in the state.

However, strangely, the Jagan government believes it needs to carry out this survey. Many sources within the party are aware of the fact that it is a dubious scheme aimed at encroaching lands. “Lands in and around Vizag have been encroached upon illegally at a massive scale by YSRCP’s men. From extortion to threatening and blackmailing, all methods are being used to make people give up their rightful lands,” said an anonymous source.

While the Jagan government has taken up this exercise, a similar process is being followed by the neighbouring state of Telangana where the TRS government came up with Dharani and LRS schemes which have further worsened the issue. By interfering in citizens’ personal records of landholding/assets, the government is not only breaching their right to privacy but also is playing the role of the “Big Brother.”

At this juncture, it is important to note the growing might of the governments and how these methods are being employed to create fear among people and use power unlawfully against them. We are yet to see how this resurvey will turn out for the future of Andhra Pradesh!
