Andhra Pradesh handicrafts QR code initiative has received a major technological upgrade with the launch of a QR code-based authentication and information system designed to promote artisans, verify product authenticity, and curb counterfeit handicrafts. The initiative, developed by the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation (Lepakshi), reflects Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s vision of taking the state’s traditional crafts to global markets through technology.

The initiative, launched by the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation (Lepakshi), enables buyers to access detailed information about handicraft products through a simple scan of a QR code attached to each item. The system was developed following the suggestion of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who has been advocating measures to secure greater recognition for the state’s rich handicraft traditions.
QR code provides product, artisan and cultural details
According to an official release, the initiative aligns with Pawan Kalyan’s vision of taking Andhra Pradesh’s handicrafts to a global audience while ensuring artisans receive due credit for their creations. During the recently concluded Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Festival, he had proposed the introduction of a comprehensive QR code system that would provide buyers with detailed information about individual artworks and the artisans behind them.
Developed within a month by Lepakshi, the QR code platform is claimed to be the first such initiative in the country. The system has been structured around three key parameters: art, product, and artisan details. By scanning the code using a mobile phone, customers can instantly access information on the history and cultural significance of a product, details about the artisan, the skills and effort involved in its creation, the raw materials used, production timelines, and product dimensions.
Additionally, information regarding Geographical Indication (GI) status or ‘One District-One Product’ (ODOP) recognition is also provided.
Bobbili Veena, Kalamkari among first products covered
In the first phase, QR code profiles have been assigned to eight iconic handicraft products representing Andhra Pradesh’s diverse artistic heritage. These include the renowned Bobbili Veena, Kalamkari artworks depicting themes from the Ramayanam, Mahabharatam, Sri Krishna Leela and Matsyavataram, as well as traditional Savara tribal paintings.
Officials said the initiative will gradually be expanded to cover all handicraft products and artisan clusters across the state. Besides helping consumers verify authenticity, the system is expected to stem the circulation of counterfeit products, improve market visibility for genuine artisans, and enhance their incomes through wider recognition.
Technology expected to boost artisan incomes and handicraft tourism
Earlier, on July 7, Pawan Kalyan had announced plans to develop handicraft tourism in Andhra Pradesh on the lines of eco-tourism and temple tourism.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Andhra Pradesh Handicraft Festival 2026, he assured artisans that the government would take all necessary steps to preserve traditional crafts, establish common facility centres across artisan clusters, and create documentaries showcasing the lives and struggles of craftsmen to a global audience.
The latest QR code initiative is seen as a significant step towards modernising the handicrafts sector while safeguarding the state’s traditional art forms and ensuring that artisans receive the recognition they deserve.
