BRICS Women Working Group Meeting Begins in India to Advance Women-Led Development

The BRICS Women Working Group Meeting will be held in Kochi, Kerala, on July 6-7 under India’s BRICS Chairship, laying the groundwork for the BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting on July 8-9. The meeting is expected to strengthen collaboration among BRICS nations and reaffirm their commitment to women-led development and inclusive economic growth.

BRICS Women Working Group Meeting Opens in Kochi

According to an official statement, senior government officials from BRICS member countries will deliberate on key issues related to women’s empowerment, women-led development, and cooperation across shared priorities.

The Women Working Group Meeting will provide an opportunity for member countries to build consensus on initiatives that promote women’s participation across governance, business, technology, and sustainable development. The discussions are aimed at translating policy priorities into practical cooperation among BRICS nations.

India Leads Discussions on Women-Led Development

India is hosting the meeting under its BRICS Chairship, guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” which reflects a people-centric and humanity-first approach.

The BRICS Women Track is focusing on four priority areas:

  • Women in governance and leadership
  • Women’s digital and financial inclusion
  • Women’s entrepreneurship and skill development
  • Women’s role in climate action, food security and nutrition

These focus areas are intended to promote inclusive growth while enhancing women’s participation in decision-making and economic development.

BRICS Nations Represent Nearly Half the World’s Population

BRICS now comprises 11 member countries — Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.

Together, the grouping accounts for around 40 per cent of global GDP and represents nearly 49.5 per cent of the world’s population.

The official statement noted that women’s political, social, and economic empowerment plays a critical role across every sector, making the Women Track a strategically important pillar under BRICS 2026.

Preparations Complete for BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting

The Working Group Meeting builds upon three virtual preparatory meetings held earlier under India’s BRICS Chairship.

These consultations enabled member countries to advance discussions ahead of the Kochi meetings, which will culminate in the BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting scheduled for July 8-9.

The outcomes of the Working Group discussions are expected to shape joint initiatives and policy recommendations that will be considered during the ministerial meeting.
