Mohan Babu legacy and early life in Telugu cinema
Mohan Babu (Manchu Bhaktavatsalam Naidu) was born on March 19, 1952, in Modhugulapalem village near Tirupati, to Manchu Narayanaswamy Naidu and Manchu Lakshmamma. From a young age, he developed an interest in cinema, which eventually led him into the film industry. In the early 1970s, he worked as a physical education teacher. Despite facing many struggles, he rose to become an unexpected stalwart in the film industry. He acted alongside legendary Telugu actors like N.T. Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao, earning their admiration. A former student of the Madras Film Institute, Mohan Babu has acted in more than 500 films in lead, supporting, and diverse roles.
A major turning point in his career came when he was introduced by the renowned director Dasari Narayana Rao. In 1975, he gained his first major success as an actor with Swargam Narakam, directed by Dasari Narayana Rao. After this film, Dasari renamed him from Bhaktavatsalam Naidu to Mohan Babu. In 1978, his unique mannerisms in the film Shivaranjani gained him immense popularity. His famous dialogue, “If someone says there is no money in Tirupati laddu or with film stars, who would believe it?” remained popular among audiences for decades. Following this success, he appeared in several films such as Simha Garjana (1978), Simhabaludu (1978), Ramakrishnulu (1978), PadaharellaVayasu (1978), Naidu Bava (1978), Sokkilla Rayudu (1979), RavanudeRamudaithe? In 1995, the film Pedarayudu, in which he acted alongside superstar Rajinikanth, created a sensation in the Telugu film industry. His performances in Sriramuluiah and Adavilo Anna were remarkable.
During the Andhra Pradesh state bifurcation, intellectuals of the Rayalaseema movement often referred to the song “Nanu Ganna Na Thalli Rayalaseema Ratanala Seema” from the film Sriramuluiah as an unofficial anthem. Iconic dialogues and Dialogue King image
It is no exaggeration to say that when it comes to delivering powerful dialogues, Mohan Babu is remembered alongside the legendary N.T. Rama Rao. In the film Pedarayudu, the dialogue comparing family bonds—not like a fish and a fisherman, but like a fish and water—deeply touches the heart. Likewise, in Rowdy, the dialogue, “Every dog wants to become a lion; but there is a difference between barking on the street and roaring in the forest,” is very impactful. In Assembly Rowdy, the famous line “If I shout, I’ll thrash; if I thrash, I’ll bite,” and in Rayalaseema Ramanna Chowdary, “If I start cutting, even hell will put up a ‘House Full’ board,” are just a few examples of his memorable dialogues.
His diction (clarity of pronunciation) became his trademark, and his style of dialogue delivery turned iconic. On the occasion of completing 40 years in the film industry, his famous dialogues were compiled into a book titled “Dialogue King.” He earned a unique place in the history of Telugu cinema and brought realism to every role he portrayed. His influence on future actors is remarkable. If Telugu cinema is considered to have four generations, Mohan Babu holds the rare distinction of acting with artists across all of them. The melodious voice of the great singer K. J. Yesudas perfectly suited Mohan Babu. In fact, whenever Yesudas sang for any actor, listeners often associated the song with Mohan Babu’s expressions. Songs featuring their combination of voice and performance captivated audiences.

Although many great actors have emerged from the Rayalaseema region, his long-standing success as a hero is a matter of pride for the people of the region. Following in his footsteps, his sons entered the film industry—Vishnu Manchu became an actor (also Pro- Chancellor of Mohan Babu University), and Manchu Manoj also chose the same path.
