K Bhagyaraj Passes Away at 73 as Indian Cinema Mourns Legendary Tamil Filmmaker
One of India’s finest screenplay writers and eminent Tamil film director and actor K Bhagyaraj passed away here on Saturday after suffering a major cardiac arrest.
The death of K Bhagyaraj marks the end of an era in Tamil cinema, with filmmakers and fans across India paying tribute to one of the industry’s most influential storytellers.
He was 73.
The veteran director and actor, who is considered one of the legends of the Tamil film industry, is survived by his wife Poornima Bhagyaraj, son Shanthnu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.
Sources close to the actor said Bhagyaraj complained of chest pain early on Saturday morning and was rushed to a private hospital where he was declared dead.

The shocking news of his death has plunged the entire Tamil film industry into mourning.
What has compounded the grief is that Bhagyaraj’s demise comes just 17 days after the passing of his mentor, legendary filmmaker Bharathirajaa, another icon and trendsetter of Tamil cinema.
Several eminent actors, directors, producers and film industry professionals across the country joined thousands of fans in expressing shock and grief over the sudden demise of the veteran filmmaker.
Tributes Pour In for K Bhagyaraj
Telugu star Venkatesh, among the first to express condolences, wrote:
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Bhagyaraj Sir. His work transcended languages and touched the hearts of millions. I feel fortunate to have been a part of films like Sundarakanda and Abbaigaru, which were born from his remarkable storytelling. Indian cinema has lost one of its finest filmmakers. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers.”
Director M. Rajesh also paid tribute, saying:
“RIP, Legend K. Bhagyaraj Sir. Your storytelling, humour and timeless screenplays have inspired generations of writers and directors. Your legacy will continue to live through your unforgettable films and the countless filmmakers you’ve influenced. Rest in peace, sir.”
K Bhagyaraj’s Legacy in Tamil Cinema
Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj, born in Tamil Nadu on January 7, 1953, worked in more than 75 films, many of which became blockbuster hits.
A trendsetter in screenplay writing and direction, Bhagyaraj was celebrated for blending humour with meaningful social commentary, creating films that appealed to audiences across generations.
Several of his classics, including Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhaanai Mudichu, Thooral Ninnu Pochu, Darling Darling Darling, Idhu Namma Aalu, Indru Poi Naalai Vaa, Mouna Geethangal and Rudra, emerged as superhits and were later remade or dubbed in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Oriya.
His screenplay techniques continue to influence contemporary filmmakers, making him one of the most respected writer-directors in Indian cinema.
Memorable Films and Screenwriting Excellence
Apart from directing and acting, Bhagyaraj was an accomplished writer who penned several acclaimed stories, including Oru Kaidhiyin Diary, directed by his mentor Bharathirajaa and starring Kamal Haasan.
The film was later remade in Hindi as Aakhree Rasta, starring Amitabh Bachchan and directed by Bhagyaraj himself, cementing his reputation as one of India’s greatest screenplay writers.
