Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati gets statutory status

Amaravati has received Amaravati statutory status as the sole and permanent capital, with the Government of India issuing a gazette notification confirming Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati on Monday.

Amaravati statutory status confirmed through gazette notification

This follows President Droupadi Murmu’s assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, bringing clarity to the long-pending Amaravati capital status.

As per the gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, is deemed to have come into force on June 2, 2024.

The amendment replaces earlier provisions and formally establishes Amaravati as sole capital, resolving the long-standing Andhra Pradesh capital issue.

Parliament approves Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati

Parliament gave its final approval to the Amendment Bill on April 2, officially recognising Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati.

The Rajya Sabha passed the bill through a voice vote, a day after the Lok Sabha cleared it, reinforcing the decision on Amaravati capital status.

Amaravati capital status ends Andhra Pradesh capital issue

The enactment has ended years of uncertainty and political developments surrounding the Andhra Pradesh capital issue after the 2014 bifurcation.

It effectively rules out any future attempts to alter Amaravati as sole capital, bringing long-term stability to governance.

Political developments around Amaravati capital status

A total of 35 MPs participated in the debate, with most supporting the bill. Only two MPs opposed it, citing concerns related to farmers.

The foundation for Amaravati was laid in 2015, but later policy changes led to delays and renewed debates over the Amaravati capital status.

After the TDP-led NDA returned to power in 2024, development works resumed, strengthening Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati as the administrative hub.

The latest move gives legal backing and clarity, ensuring continued progress in the capital region.
