The Indian transportation sector is the backbone of our country’s economy. The millions of kilometers of national highways are the lifelines of the nation. The truck drivers who work tirelessly on these roads constantly traveling to deliver goods to their destinations on time are the true road warriors. However their lives have long been filled with challenges and dangers.
According to various reports, India’s road transport sector is a massive industry. Approximately 4 million trucks operate in our country. However, there is a severe shortage of truck drivers. It is estimated that there are only 3.6 million drivers for approximately 6 million trucks, which means many trucks are left idle. The problems these drivers face are numerous. They commonly work long hours, have irregular shifts, and spend long periods away from their families.
This strenuous lifestyle has a severe impact on their health, with common issues like vision impairment, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Additionally, due to the lack of proper, safe, and hygienic resting places along highways, many drivers are forced to sleep in their trucks or at roadside dhabas. This not only harms their physical and mental health but also increases the number of road accidents due to driver fatigue. The social stigma associated with this profession and the low wages are why young people are not interested in joining this field, which further increases the driver shortage.
The Launch and Goals of “Apna Ghar”:
As a solution to these serious problems and in line with the government’s goal to provide better safety and welfare for truck drivers, In line with the Government’s vision of enhancing the safety and well being of truckers, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has launched an ambitious initiative named ‘Apna Ghar’ aimed at improving truckers’ long-haul journey across the country. As on 01.07.2025, 368 ‘Apna Ghar’ with 4611 beds besides other facilities, have been set up by Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) at Retail Outlets (ROs) along Highways across the country. This program operates with three main objectives. The first is to provide rest and relief from fatigue.
By offering a safe and affordable resting place for drivers, it aims to reduce accidents caused by fatigue. The second is to improve health and hygiene. It addresses the health problems of drivers by providing clean toilets, separate bathrooms, purified drinking water, and low-cost meals. The final objective is to improve working conditions and promote road safety. By improving drivers’ working conditions and providing them with proper rest, the program aims to make the profession more attractive and reduce road accidents. A mobile application has also been introduced to make these facilities easily accessible to drivers. Through this app, drivers can find and book resting places along their routes.
The program is receiving a good response, with bookings and app downloads increasing daily. To encourage drivers, a scheme has also been launched where drivers who purchase a specific amount of high-speed diesel get a free stay in a dormitory.
The Connection to Accident Reduction:
It is a well-known fact that road accidents happen due to driver fatigue. The lack of proper rest and sleep affects a driver’s decision-making and reaction time, increasing the likelihood of accidents. The “Apna Ghar” program directly addresses this issue. By providing a safe and comfortable place to rest, drivers can continue their journey feeling fresh and alert. The government believes this will lead to a reduction in road accidents. While long-term data on its impact is not yet available, it is hoped that road safety will improve as drivers use these facilities.
Challenges and Future Plans:
While the “Apna Ghar” program is receiving a good response, there are some challenges in its implementation and expansion. The Indian trucking industry is massive, and our highways are very extensive. The current 368 facilities, while a good start, are not enough for all the drivers. The government has set a target to establish such facilities at 1,000 fuel stations by March 2027. This is a positive step.
Also, while the mobile app is a great idea many drivers are not technologically savvy. It is very important to promote the program through traditional methods and to provide assistance at these facilities. Additionally, it is necessary to ensure that the quality of hygiene, safety, and services is consistent across all centers. To address these challenges, public-private partnerships, a strategic expansion plan, and awareness campaigns are needed. By solving these problems, the “Apna Ghar” program can become not just a well-intentioned initiative, but a powerful force that can completely change the lives of truck drivers and the country’s transportation sector.
