Vivekananda’s Universal Message

132 years ago, on September 11, 1893, in Chicago, a Hindu monk’s speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions introduced India’s spiritual and cultural richness to the world. That monk was Swami Vivekananda. In his honour, the day is celebrated across India as ‘Digvijay Divas’ (Victory Day). Representing India and the Hindu faith at the event, which ran from September 11 to 27, 1893, Swami Vivekananda emerged as a great spiritual leader, a profound thinker, a powerful orator, and a true patriot. He was the pioneer who brought Hinduism to the Western world.

*A New Path Forward:

At the Parliament, Swami Vivekananda proudly presented India’s ancient philosophical and spiritual traditions on a global stage. His speech portrayed India not merely as a geographical entity but as a land of profound spirituality and philosophy. It built a strong bridge between Eastern and Western cultures and thoughts, paving a new path for religious harmony.

*A Momentous Welcome:

Though he lived for just 39 years, his legacy is etched forever in India’s history. At the Parliament, which was attended by representatives from all over the world, Swami Vivekananda’s address was praised by all. A truly memorable moment occurred when he began his speech with the words, “My dear brothers and sisters of America,” prompting a standing ovation and three continuous minutes of applause from the audience. This moment was more than just a gesture of respect; it was an extraordinary tribute to India’s spiritual message on the world stage.

*Towards Enlightenment:

He delivered a powerful message on the importance of tolerance and mutual respect among all religions. He underscored the universal nature of religion and the significance of interfaith dialogue. He declared that all faiths share a common goal of leading humanity towards truth and enlightenment. His speech was a strong voice against religious fanaticism, bigotry, and intolerance, asserting that no single country or religion needed to dominate another, as every faith is equally valid.

*Conscience is Paramount:

Vivekananda not only awakened India but also introduced Yoga and Vedanta to America and England through his lectures. Upon his return to India, he established the Ramakrishna Math to foster national consciousness, social service, and spiritual work, guiding the youth of the nation. His inaugural speech in Chicago continues to resonate throughout the world.

His teachings were not limited to religious unity. He proclaimed that Hinduism symbolises service to humanity, education, and the power of youth. He stated that the difference between a great person and a common person lies in their level of concentration. His teachings transcend all barriers of age, caste, nationality, profession, and gender. He explained the concept of the soul, saying, “The spiritual force is the soul that lights up a man’s heart. Doctrines, traditions, and temples are worthless compared to it.” He promoted harmony among all religions, stating, “Do not criticise other religions. Every faith and every doctrine has some good in it.”

*Arise, Awake!

His slogan, “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached,” continues to inspire generations of Indian youth. He preached, “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.” He strongly believed that the future of the nation lay in the hands of its youth and gave great importance to education, personality development, and national service.

“We are responsible for what we are. He showed that we have the power to create ourselves.” He taught that we should learn what is good from others and apply it in our own way, without trying to become like them. “If what we are now is the result of our past actions, what we want to be in the future will be the product of our present actions. Therefore, we must know how to act,” he said.

His speeches, books, letters, and poems have inspired and continue to inspire youth across India and the world. These teachings have played a crucial role in shaping India’s social and intellectual fabric. ‘Digvijay Divas’ is a living tribute to Vivekananda’s compassionate vision of a united world. His ideal of “unity in diversity” remains incredibly relevant today, inspiring peaceful coexistence among people worldwide. By striving to embody his ideals of moral strength, cultural respect, and global brotherhood, we offer him a true tribute on this day. Jai Hind!
