What are BJP’s prospects in Telangana for 2023 Assembly Elections?

The Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS), or previously known as TRS party, has been in power in Telangana since 2014 and won the 2018 state assembly elections with a large majority. The party is known for its focus on welfare programs for marginalized communities, irrigation projects, and infrastructure development. However, as of the 2018 Telangana state assembly elections, the BRS/TRS party won a large majority by securing 88 out of 119 seats in the state assembly.

In terms of vote share, the BRS/TRS party received 46.9% of the total votes polled in the 2018 Telangana state assembly elections. This was significantly higher than the vote share of the Indian National Congress party, which received 28.4% of the votes polled, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which received 7.6% of the votes polled. The TRS has been known for its focus on welfare programs for marginalized communities, irrigation projects, and infrastructure development.

The BJP is currently the main opposition party in Telangana. The saffron party has been trying to expand its presence in the state and has been actively campaigning against the ruling TRS government. The BJP’s primary focus has been on issues such as unemployment, corruption, and the alleged appeasement of certain communities by the TRS government.

Factors that could impact the BJP’s vote share in the upcoming 2023 elections in Telangana include:

  1. Alliances with other political parties – The BJP may form alliances with other regional or national political parties to increase its vote share in the state.
  2. Performance of the TRS government – If the TRS government is perceived to be underperforming or there is anti-incumbency sentiment, the BJP may benefit from it. With key TRS leader and CM KCR’s daughter Kavitha being stuck in the Delhi Liquor scam, BJP could continue to use this against the BRS. However, the BJP will need to work hard on criticising the performance of the TRS government as welfare schemes seem to be working positively for the pink party.
  3. Candidate selection – The BJP’s choice of candidates for the upcoming elections could play a crucial role in determining its vote share. If the party fields strong candidates, it may be able to increase its vote share. Candidates also need to have people connect and be known for their work in the constituencies or the state.
  4. Campaign strategy – The BJP’s campaign strategy and ability to effectively communicate its message to voters could also impact its vote share in the upcoming elections. Will it choose a communal narrative or go on the development-centric narrative is something one needs to watch out for!

It is important to note that political scenarios before the upcoming 2023 Assembly Elections will be constantly evolving and may be subject to change. The BJP’s ability to increase its vote share in the 2023 Telangana state assembly elections will depend on a variety of factors along with the party’s campaign and performance in the state.
